Who I am

About me

Kevin J. Simms, LCSW, CADC-II, CSAT, is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor, and Certified Sex Addiction Therapist. As Lead Therapist and Recovery Coach at Kenshō Counseling, which he founded in 2023, Kevin provides individual therapy in West LA and facilitates a Men’s Sex Addiction Process Group via zoom. He has been in private practice since 2018.

Kevin’s therapeutic approach is engaging, directive, and grounded in person-centered therapy, two-person psychology, and his own lived experiences. He holds an Associate’s Degree in Chemical Dependency Counseling, a Bachelor’s in Social Work, and a Master’s in Social Work from Nazareth College in Rochester, NY.

Kevin’s leadership experience includes serving as Clinic Director at Embark Behavioral Health, an IOP/PHP program for individuals aged 11–28, and Senior Director of Clinical Services at the Weingart Center on Skid Row, where he oversaw care for nearly 2,000 clients. He also revitalized the In-Custody Treatment Program at the Theo Lacy Facility in Orange County as its Director. Across his roles, Kevin has worked with diverse populations, including couples, families, and formerly incarcerated individuals, bringing empathy and innovation to his practice.

He is also a clinical supervisor, mentoring staff who work with clients facing complex challenges.

Kevin’s path to social work is deeply personal. After losing his mother at age 15, he faced years of addiction, incarceration, and homelessness before achieving sobriety on June 14, 2008. With a GED earned while incarcerated, Kevin pursued higher education and built a career of service and purpose.

Kevin’s recovery was shaped by creative outlets, particularly music, which he rediscovered with his best friend in sobriety. He now channels his experiences into helping others overcome barriers to recovery, believing that “recovery isn’t just about trying harder—it’s about trying something different. Perspective shifts reality, and with the right support, meaningful change is possible.”

Outside of work, Kevin enjoys reading, Zen meditation, yoga, and riding his Harley. A vegan and live music enthusiast, he values mindfulness, community, and growth, staying grounded in gratitude for his journey.

My Philosophy

Change the story. Change the narrative. Building self esteem comes from doing esteem-able acts. My life experience enables me to offer effective, individualized, client-centered care. I treat a number of mental health disorders and addictions, utilizing two person psychology, CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing while providing a safe space to individuals, families, and couples both in office and remote.

Individual and Group Therapy

We are all on a healing journey doing the best we can with what we have been given. We are all connected. There is no separation. We are spiritual beings having a human experience. We achieve this by building true intimacy with ourselves and others, facing our selves, and our inner most fears. We do this with others help, self cannot fix self.

Freedom

Here at Kenshō Counseling we will work at becoming free from guilt and shame. We will work together to be free from our addictive patterns and cycles. Addiction is an isolating disease that keeps us in a vicious, never ending cycle, and alienates us from the ones we love.  When our heads match our hearts we start to live authentically, and speak to others using the language of the heart.  Here at Kenshō Counseling we work on being free from the destructive bond of our addictions, and start to rebuild the relationships in our lives that matter most.

Providing a Safe Space

My focus is to help individuals heal, energize, and become aware of their inner strengths. I achieve this by providing a safe, inclusive, neutral space, listening to your concerns, and taking action steps toward recovery together. I have your back, let's get started on this journey.
